SUMMARY:Adult Education Program: Albert Einstein
DESCRIPTION:(Adult Education Event)\nAlbert Einstein: Champion of Racial Justice and Equality \n\n\nThe Peretz Program Planning Committee is sponsoring an online program with speakers Elizabeth Romanaux & Shirley Satterfield focusing on Albert Einstein. Please register for the program in advance of the event. After registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the event. \nWhen Albert Einstein moved to New Jersey in 1933\, the press reported on everything he did — with one notable exception. The prejudiced media of the time did not mention Dr. Einstein’s deep friendships with and advocacy for African Americans\, including W.E.B. DuBois and Paul Robeson. Find out about Einstein’s efforts to help achieve racial equity in America and about a new museum being developed in his honor. \nElizabeth Romanaux grew up in Princeton\, NJ hearing many tales about Albert Einstein\, who died the year she was born. To honor Dr. Einstein and his scientific and humanitarian legacies\, she is currently spearheading a group that is developing a permanent Einstein Museum in Princeton. It is expected to open in 2028. Ms. Romanaux is a retired museum professional and a lifelong science nerd who loves to explain scientific ideas to others\, something she particularly enjoyed doing while working at Liberty Science Center in Jersey City\, NJ for 28 years. She is a graduate of Wellesley College and lives in Kingston\, NJ. \nShirley Satterfield is a retired teacher\, guidance counselor\, historian\, and founder of the Witherspoon-Jackson Historical and Cultural Society. Her family has lived in Princeton for six generations. All too aware of gentrification in Princeton’s traditionally African American neighborhood\, Ms. Satterfield has spent years preserving and sharing the history of the area. She has the special distinction of having been a friend to Albert Einstein when she was a child\, and can speak eloquently about the many ways Dr. Einstein helped her community. \n  \n\n

SUMMARY:Adult Education Program: Film and Discussion
DESCRIPTION:(Adult Education Event)\nMy Disability Roadmap: Film and Online Discussion \n\n\nThe Peretz Program Planning Committee is sponsoring a 3-part online program\, beginning with a free\, online screening of the film My Disability Roadmap. Please register for the film in advance of the event. The film will be shown with open captions and audio description for maximum accessibility. \nIn this Emmy Award winning documentary short\, Samuel Habib wants to date\, leave home\, and go to college. But he drives a 350-pound wheelchair\, uses a communication device\, and can have a seizure at any moment. Determined to find his path forward\, he seeks out guidance from America’s most rebellious disability activists. Will they empower him to launch the bold adult life he craves?  The film\, co-directed by Samuel and his father Dan Habib\, premiered on May 17\, 2022\, as a New York Times Op-Doc. The entire lead cast on this project – and the majority of the production and outreach crew – are people with disabilities. Following the film\, there will be a pre-recorded Q&A with Samuel and a live discussion with Dan. \nDan Habib (pronounced “Habeeb”) and his son Samuel Habib are co-directors of the film and the upcoming feature film\, THE RIDE AHEAD (a major expansion of this film). Dan is also the creator of award-winning documentary films including INTELLIGENT LIVES\, WHO CARES ABOUT KELSEY?\, MR. CONNOLLY HAS ALS\, INCLUDING SAMUEL and many other short films on disability-related topics. He is the Inclusive Communities Project Director at the Westchester Institute for Human Development. Dan has screened and discussed his films hundreds of times in the U.S. and internationally\, at universities\, corporations\, national conferences\, film festivals\, and independent theaters for educators\, families\, students\, employees\, policy makers\, and the general public. His films have been broadcast nationally on public television stations\, nominated for Emmy awards\, and translated into 17 languages for use as teaching tools worldwide. In 2014\, Habib was appointed by President Barack Obama to the President’s Committee for People with Intellectual Disabilities. (Some of you may know Dan – he is from Highland Park – the son of Miriam and Stan Habib.) \nSamuel Habib\, 24\, is a high school graduate and community college student currently pursuing a career as a multimedia storyteller. Samuel is a co-director of the Emmy® Award winning film MY DISABILITY ROADMAP and the upcoming feature film\, THE RIDE AHEAD. Samuel interned at the local community access television station in Concord\, NH and had a paid job at a video production studio. In 2016\, he created a film about disability rights leader Judith Heumann\, that was featured in the Breaking Down Barriers Film Festival in Moscow\, Russia. Samuel also helped Dan create the nationally broadcast film MR. CONNOLLY HAS ALS. Samuel uses a wheelchair for mobility and a communication device (as well as his voice) to express himself. In addition to exploring his current and future academic and career options\, Samuel also navigates significant\, chronic health challenges.

SUMMARY:Adult Education Program: Film and Discussions
DESCRIPTION:(Adult Education Event)\nWho Will Remain: Film and Online Discussions \n\n\nThe Yiddish Book Center is sponsoring this online screening of the film Who Will Remain? (Ver Vet Blaybn?). Please contact Judy Stern or Claudia Farber for the meeting registration link. Director and producer Christa Whitney will lead a discussion following the screening. \n\nFilm Synopsis: \nAttempting to better understand her grandfather Avrom Sutzkever\, Israeli actress Hadas Kalderon travels to Lithuania\, using her grandfather’s diary to trace his early life in Vilna and his survival of the Holocaust. Sutzkever (1913–2010) was an acclaimed Yiddish poet—described by the New York Times as the “greatest poet of the Holocaust”—whose verse drew on his youth in Siberia and Vilna\, his spiritual and material resistance during World War II\, and his post-war life in the State of Israel. Kalderon\, whose native language is Hebrew and must rely on translation of her grandfather’s work\, is nevertheless determined to connect with what remains of the poet’s bygone world and confront the personal responsibility of preserving her grandfather’s literary legacy. Woven into the documentary are family home videos\, newly recorded interviews\, and archival recordings\, including Sutzkever’s testimony at the Nuremberg Trial. Recitation of his poetry and personal reflections on resisting Nazi forces as a partisan fighter reveal how Sutzkever tried to make sense of the Holocaust and its aftermath. As Kalderon strives to reconstruct the stories told by her grandfather\, the film examines the limits of language\, geography\, and time. \nFilm Directors’ Statements: \nChrista P. Whitney: It was reading Avrom Sutzkever in my first semester at Smith College that introduced me to the world of Yiddish literature. Back then\, I never could have predicted that this interest in Yiddish would lead me on adventures all over the world and eventually to this film. Reading Sutzkever feels like a return to an intellectual and emotional home within Yiddish culture\, so working on this film came with intense pressure as well as pleasure. I am not alone in my fascination with this writer and the world of his youth in pre-war Vilna\, so it is my hope and honor to share this writer’s wild life story and endless well of inspired poetic work with a wider audience through this\, my first feature-length documentary film. \nEmily Felder: I was drawn to tell this story not only as a documentarian but also as a Jewish woman. This film examines the significant testimony of a Holocaust survivor and explores the challenges of intergenerational cultural transmission and the inherited trauma therein. As an American Jew whose family experienced this historical injustice and shares in its collective memory\, I am humbled to illuminate Avrom Sutzkever as a key literary figure in the evolution of secular Jewish expression and identity.

SUMMARY:Adult Education Program: "Unearthed"
DESCRIPTION:(Adult Education Event)\nUnearthed: A Memoir by Meryl Frank \n\n\nAt this Zoom event\, Meryl Frank will discuss her recent\, highly acclaimed memoir and detective story: Unearthed: A Lost Actress\, a Forbidden Book\, and a Search for Life in the Shadow of the Holocaust. \nUnearthed is described as a thrilling mystery woven into a beautifully constructed family memoir. As a child\, Meryl Frank was the chosen inheritor of family remembrance. Her aunt Mollie\, a formidable and cultured woman\, insisted that Meryl never forget who they were\, where they came from\, and the hate that nearly destroyed them. Over long afternoons\, Mollie told her about the city\, the theater\, and\, above all else\, Meryl’s cousin\, the radiant Franya Winter. Franya was the leading light of Vilna’s Yiddish theater\, a remarkable and precocious woman who cast off the restrictions of her Hasidic family and community to play roles as prostitutes and bellhops\, lovers and nuns. Yet there was one thing her aunt Mollie would never tell Meryl: how Franya died. Before Mollie passed away\, she gave Meryl a Yiddish book containing the terrible answer\, but forbade her to read it. And for years\, Meryl obeyed. \nThe book is the story of Meryl’s search for Franya and a timely history of hatred and resistance. Through archives across four continents\, by way of chance encounters and miraculous discoveries\, and eventually\, guided by the shocking truth recorded in the pages of the forbidden book\, Meryl conjures the rogue spirit of her cousin—her beauty and her tragedy. Meryl’s search reveals a lost world destroyed by hatred\, illuminating the cultural haven of Vilna and its resistance during World War II. As she seeks to find her lost family legacy\, Meryl looks for answers to the questions that have defined her life: what is our duty to the past? How do we honor such memories while keeping them from consuming us? And what do we teach our children about tragedy? \nAbridged Bio: Meryl Frank is a long-time Highland Park resident\, a Rutgers (and Yale) graduate and a former Mayor of Highland Park. She was appointed as the United States Ambassador to the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) by President Barack Obama in 2009 and serves on the boards of many organizations. Meryl was selected as one of “The Fifty Most Influential Jews in the World” by the Jerusalem Post (2012) for her work on behalf of women around the world\, and is currently the President of Makeda Global Network. \nPlease contact Judy Stern or Claudia Farber for the Zoom meeting registration link. Open to the public.

SUMMARY:Adult Education Program: Film and Discussions
DESCRIPTION:(Adult Education Event)\nIsraelism: Film and Online Discussions \n\n\nThe Peretz Program Planning Committee is sponsoring a 3-part online program\, beginning with a free\, online screening of the film Israelism. Please register and watch the film prior to January 21 at 3:00 pm. This is a must-see film that has been canceled and uncanceled on a number of college campuses. \nFollowing your individual screening of the film\, join us in a Panel Discussion of the film moderated by New York Times Opinion Writer and Professor Peter Beinart featuring the filmmaker\, the co-founder of IfNotNow\, and others. Registering to watch the film will automatically register you for the Panel Discussion. \nImmediately following the Panel Discussion (or by 4:30 pm)\, participate in a Zoom discussion with members of the Peretz Community\, moderated by Peretz President Emeritus and IfNotNow member Ira Mintz. Please contact Judy Stern or Claudia Farber for the Zoom meeting link. Open to the public. \n\n\nAbout Israelism: Israel is central to the political and cultural life of the American Jewish community. But it has also become a deeply divisive subject\, as painful generational cracks have emerged within the Jewish community over the Israel-Palestine conflict\, inspiring argument\, protest and even censorship. \nFocusing on the stories of two young Americans raised to defend Israel at all costs\, Israelism traces their awakening to Israel’s dehumanization of Palestinians and the ongoing violence of the occupation. The film explores the past\, present\, and future of the relationship between American Jews and Israel\, as growing numbers question whether support for Israel should condition and define their Jewish identity. Featuring a range of American Jewish thinkers\, community leaders and activists\, Israelism asks how and why Israel became the cornerstone of American Judaism\, what the consequences have been\, and what will happen as divisions continue to grow.

SUMMARY:Adult Education Program: Film and Discussion
DESCRIPTION:(Adult Education Event)\nThe Goldman Case: Film and Online Discussion \n\n\nThe Peretz Program Planning Committee has selected The Goldman Case as the primary film for our annual Rutgers Bildner Center Jewish Film Festival film discussion. This film is available to screen virtually from Nov. 6 to Nov. 12. The film was an Official Selection of this year’s Cannes Film Festival. \n\nThis electrifying courtroom drama offers a fascinating portrait of Pierre Goldman and his highly politicized 1976 appeals trial that gripped and divided France. Director Cédric Kahn was inspired to make the movie after reading the defendant’s autobiography\, Obscure Memories of a Polish Jew Born in France\, which Goldman penned in prison. Political activist turned criminal\, Goldman was tried and convicted of multiple crimes\, including two murders; the police prejudice and antisemitism he endured were a microcosm of the political\, ideological\, and racial tensions of the time. \n\nRegal Cinema and Rutgers Business School in-theater screenings of a variety of other Jewish festival films will be held from October 26th through November 5th; these in-theater screenings will differ from the virtual program. SUMMARY:Adult Education Program: Mothers of Invention
DESCRIPTION:(Adult Education Event)\nMothers of Invention: Carol Simon Levin \n\n\nCarol Simon Levin portrays Lillian Moller Gilbreth\, motion study pioneer and “Cheaper by the Dozen” mother of 12 and shares the stories of other overlooked women innovators\, including many women of color. She is the author of the book Remembering the Ladies: From Patriots in Petticoats to Presidential Candidates and the Garden State Legacy article “Reclaiming OurVoice: NJ’s Role in the Fight for Woman Suffrage”. SUMMARY:Adult Education Program: Women of Valor
DESCRIPTION:(Adult Education Event)\nWomen of Valor: Polish Jewish Resistors to the Third Reich \n\n\nIn this talk based on her recent book\, Joanne D. Gilbert\, author\, educator\, and public speaker\, celebrates the heroines of World War II who fought the horrors of the Holocaust. \nAs combat partisans in the forests\, spies\, couriers\, code-breakers\, smugglers\, nurses\, translators\, and rescuers of Jewish children and adults\, these women show that the Jews did not “go silently like sheep to the slaughter.” This is a unique and inspiring perspective on the extraordinary Jewish and non-Jewish women who risked everything to defy the Nazis. \nDr. Gilbert grew up in Oak Park\, Michigan\, a predominantly Jewish suburb of Detroit\, where many Holocaust survivors had come to live after World War II. Her earliest influence was her beloved grandmother\, who had been able to leave her home in Vilna\, Lithuania before the Nazis came and eliminated the Jewish community. Her stories caused Dr. Gilbert to wonder about the ways her relatives might have fought the Nazis\, and whether their non-Jewish neighbors had tried to help them. Her journey took her throughout the US\, Canada\, and Europe to do extensive research and interviews\, resulting in her book Women of Valor. \nPlease contact Judy Stern or Claudia Farber for the Zoom meeting registration link. Open to the public.

SUMMARY:Adult Education Program: Ancient/Modern Ethical Principles
DESCRIPTION:(Adult Education Event)\nAncient/Modern Ethical Principles \n\n\nThe collection “Ethics of the Fathers” was compiled 1800 years ago\, but many of the ethical principles it contains are as relevant now as they were then. The ethical principles in the collection (its Hebrew name is Pirkei Avot) fall into three categories—between a person and him/herself\, between a person and other people\, and between a person and God. The third is the smallest category\, but the principles in it are also relevant to secular Jews because they can be reframed in a secular way. Joe Rosenstein will talk about a selection of the ethical teachings in Pirkei Avot and provide some historical context for them\, and then open the session for comments and questions. \n\nJoe Rosenstein retired five years ago after serving as a professor of mathematics at Rutgers for 48 years. He has published extensively in mathematics\, mathematics education\, and Judaica. His most recent publication\, written while he was a prisoner of Covid\, is entitled “Reflections on Pirkei Avot (Ethics of the Fathers): Not Just What My Rebbe Taught Me.” This and other publications can be explored (and some can be purchased) at his website joerosenstein.com. He and his wife Judy have lived in Highland Park since 1969 and they have five daughters and 12 grandchildren. \n\nPlease Register Here in advance. After registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the event. SUMMARY:Adult Education Program: Women Artists Series
DESCRIPTION:(Adult Education Event)\nThawing the Chilly Climate: The Mary H Dana Women Artists Series at 50 \n\n\nThis illustrated talk\, by Dr. Ferris Olin\, will provide an overview of the oldest continuously running exhibition space in America for emerging and established women artists\, founded in 1971 by Highland Park native and MacArthur Genius\, Joan Snyder. The Mary H. Dana Women Artists Series\, with its galleries in the Douglass Library\, has had a long and distinguished history. Its curators have organized shows for more than 700 women artists. Brodsky) of the Rutgers Center for Women in the Arts and Humanities\, and The Feminist Art Project\, an international collaboration to make visible the impact of women on the cultural landscape. She also established the Miriam Schapiro Archives on Women Artists at Rutgers as well as the Margery Somers Foster Center\, a research center focused on documenting women’s leadership in the public arena. \nOlin served as Associate Director of the Institute for Research on Women and earlier\, Director of the Art Library. She was curator of the Mary H. Dana Women Artists Series at Rutgers from 1995-2006 and later (with Judith K. Brodsky) from 2006-2013; and with Brodsky\, Olin created the Women Artists Archive National Directory (WAAND)\, funded initially by the Getty Foundation\, a digital directory of archives where the papers of women artists active in the US since 1945 are located. \nHer most recent book\, co-authored with Judith K. Brodsky\, is called Junctures in Women’s Leadership: The Arts (Rutgers University Press\, fall 2018). Ferris Olin is the recipient of numerous awards\, among them the Women’s Caucus for Art Lifetime Achievement Award and the College Art Association Committee on Women’s Annual Recognition Award (now known as the CAA Distinguished Feminist Award). \nPlease contact Judy Stern or Claudia Farber for the Zoom meeting link. Open to the public.

SUMMARY:Adult Education Program: Film and Discussion
DESCRIPTION:(Adult Education Event)\nBreaking the Silence on the Occupation: Film and Online Discussion \n\n\nWe will be streaming this extraordinary 20 minute video by Israeli Human Rights Lawyer Michael Sfard. The video breaks down the Israeli government’s decades-long project to settle Palestinian land in the West Bank\, entrench permanent Israeli control\, and prevent Palestinian self-determination and statehood – essentially to erase the green line (which has not appeared on Israeli maps for decades). \nIt is a terrific legal/emotional/historical video. Debbie Schlossberg from Central Jersey J Street will moderate the discussion. \nPlease contact Judy Stern or Claudia Farber for the Zoom meeting link. Open to the public.

DESCRIPTION:(Adult Education Event)\nRutgers Film Festival Online Discussion \n\n\nThis pandemic year the Bildner Center is presenting the annual Rutgers Jewish Film Festival (RJFF) both at theaters and online\, Nov. 7-21\, 2021. The Peretz Planning Committee has selected two films for an online discussion: \nWet Dog. 103 min. SUMMARY:Friday-Night Program: Philip Orenstein\, Painting History
DESCRIPTION:(Adult Education Event)\nPhilip Orenstein: Painting History – a Virtual Discussion \n\n\nIn the summer of 1940\, after the German occupation of Paris\, the French liberal democratic government voted to establish a dictatorship. The facts about this regressive government and its treatment of its Jewish citizens were suppressed and hidden for nearly fifty years. \nIn the span of fifteen years between 1992 and 2007\, Philip Orenstein created seven large paintings called\, “Murals for the Fiftieth Anniversary of the Liberation of Paris\, 1944”. The paintings represent seven events during WW II\, mostly battles that were important to French citizens at the time and\, more specifically\, to France’s Jewish citizens. The paintings were occasioned by the fiftieth anniversary celebration of the liberation of Paris in 1944. Phil’s talk will be about the murals\, how he made them\, how they relate to his interpretation of the celebration of the liberation\, and their relevance to today. \nPhil was born in Paris and is a retired Professor of Art at Rutgers\, New Brunswick; and a long-time member of the Peretz School and Community. \n\n\nAdvance Registration is required. Please Register Here. After registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information on how to join the meeting. \nWe hope to see you there!

SUMMARY:Lag B'Omer
DESCRIPTION:During Roman times\, rabbis would study the Torah in secret. Their students would stand guard and fool the Romans by having sporting competitions. The holiday of Lag B’Omer commemorates this time. Today\, Lag B’Omer is celebrated with picnics\, sporting events\, hikes\, and bon fires. Please join us for our Lag B’Omer celebration at Peretz. We will be celebrating with food\, activities\, and a hike of the Delaware-Raritan Canal (weather permitting). \nPlease invite any families you know that may be interested in the school.
